Miscellaneous collection of letters and documents, 1784-1859 [manuscript]

Many of the letters are addressed to Rev. John McDowell, and a number are by clergy members. In general, topics range from church and legal matters to members of the legislature of New York. Writers include: Matthew Carey (1805), George W. Bethune (1835); several exchanges between Henry Kollock and his sister, Hetty; J.B. Pinney (1844); and Thomas Grimké (1826). There is also a survey of some properties in Elizabethtown (N.J.?) in 1874. There are also a few clippings.

Mathew C. Carey (1760-1839) was a publisher, economist, and humanitarian. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to America in 1784, after involvement in Irish revolutionary activity. John McDowell (1780-1863) served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown, New Jersey from 1804 until 1833.
